How to Wear Flat Back Earrings (Titanium Studs)

To put in a flat back earring, insert the post from behind your ear and attach the front piece — either by screwing it on (internally threaded) or by pressing a small pin into the post (threadless, also called push pin). Because the post enters from behind your ear where you can’t see it well, the first few times are easier if someone helps. Once you’re familiar with the closure, wearing them on your own becomes routine.

This guide walks through both closure types with 30-second videos and answers the questions we get most often about daily wear. Everything below applies to our implant-grade titanium flat back studs, which are designed for sensitive ears.

Which type do you have? A quick check

If you’re not sure which closure your earring uses, look at the front piece and the top of the post.

Internally threaded: The front piece unscrews cleanly from the post. You’ll see fine spiral threads on the tip of the post (or inside the front piece). If you can twist the front and it separates with a smooth rotation, it’s threaded.

Threadless (push pin): The front piece has a thin straight pin sticking out from behind the decorative element. The post has a small hole at the top where that pin slots in. Nothing screws — you pull to remove, press to attach.

How to wear internally threaded flat backs

Internally threaded flat backs screw together, which gives them a strong hold once secured. Here’s how to put them in.

  1. Unscrew the front piece from the post. Twist counterclockwise until it comes free. Set the front piece somewhere flat where it won’t roll.
  2. Insert the post from the back of your ear. Guide the post through your piercing from behind, holding the flat disc between your thumb and finger.
  3. Align the front piece with the post and begin threading it on. The threads only catch when the pieces are properly aligned, so take your time. If it doesn’t turn easily on the first quarter-turn, back off and re-align.
  4. Twist clockwise until it feels secure. A snug fit keeps it in place for everyday wear. Don’t overtighten — hand-tight is enough.

To remove: hold the flat back disc, unscrew the front counterclockwise, then slide the post out from behind.

Honest note: threading can gradually loosen with daily movement. We recommend a quick weekly check to make sure the front piece is still snug. Threaded is the more secure option — but only if you actually check it.

How to wear threadless (push pin) flat backs

Threadless flat backs use tension instead of threads — the pin’s slight bend grips inside the post’s opening. Here’s the wear sequence.

  1. Pull the top straight out from the post. Feel the tension as it separates. This tells you how tightly the pin is gripping.
  2. If the top comes off too easily, gently bend the pin before wearing it. A slight curve adds grip. If the pin is completely straight, the front piece can pop off during the day.
  3. Insert the post from the back of your ear. Guide it through your piercing the same way you would with any stud.
  4. Insert the top from the front and press until it feels secure. You should feel the pin catch — a small click or firm resistance means it’s seated.

To remove: hold the flat back disc, gently pull the front piece straight out, then slide the post out from behind. No twisting.

Honest note: threadless closures are faster to change than threaded, but they rely entirely on pin tension. If the pin doesn’t have enough bend when you first put it in, the front piece can come out unexpectedly. Do the tension test every time you wear it.

Swapping the top for a different style

Both closure types let you swap the front piece for a different look while keeping the post in your ear. This is one of the practical benefits of flat backs — you can rotate styles without redoing the whole insertion from behind.

Threadless (push pin): the quickest to change. Pull the current top out, insert the new one, and press until secure. Retest the pin’s tension every time you swap, since each front piece has its own bend.

Internally threaded: takes a little longer. Unscrew the current top counterclockwise, screw the new one on clockwise, hand-tight. The post stays in place through the swap — no re-insertion needed.

Care and daily wear

Titanium flat back earrings are safe to wear during sleep, showers, and workouts. Our implant-grade titanium meets ASTM F-136 specifications, is nickel-free, and won’t corrode from sweat or water.

A small tip: after showering or swimming, pat the area behind the flat back disc dry. Moisture trapped between the disc and your ear is the most common cause of irritation, and takes ten seconds to prevent.

Frequently asked questions

How do I put in a flat back earring by myself?

You can wear them yourself, but the first few times are easier with a mirror or someone helping — the post goes in from behind your ear, which you can’t see directly. Insert the post from behind using your dominant hand, then hold the flat back disc still while attaching the front piece. The motion becomes automatic within a few wears.

Why won’t my flat back earring go in?

The most common reason is that the piercing has partially tightened from not wearing earrings recently. Try a taper tool to gently reopen the channel, or start with a slightly thinner post. If you feel firm resistance, stop and see a piercer — forcing it can cause damage or bleeding.

Do I need a taper tool for flat back earrings?

A taper isn’t required, but it’s commonly used for both threaded and threadless closures, especially the first time you wear a new pair. It gently guides the post through the piercing channel and reduces the pull-and-poke feeling. Tapers are inexpensive and reusable.

Can I sleep in flat back earrings?

Yes. Flat back earrings are designed for sleeping — the back sits flush against your ear with no exposed pieces to press into your skin or catch on a pillow. Implant-grade titanium is biocompatible and hypoallergenic, so leaving them in overnight is safe and comfortable.

Can I swap the tops on flat back earrings?

Yes. Both threaded and threadless flat backs are designed so you can change the front piece without removing the post from your ear. Threadless swaps take seconds — pull the current top out, insert the new one, press until secure. Threaded takes about a minute — unscrew counterclockwise, screw the new top on clockwise, hand-tight.

Getting comfortable with the wear routine

Wearing flat back earrings becomes second nature once you know your closure type. Take your time on the first few tries — align, screw or press, check it holds. Then daily wear settles into a routine, with no swap needed for sleep, showers, or workouts.
